Reception Children Starting September 2026

Welcome to Thames Ditton Infant School

We are delighted that you have chosen our school for your child and we very much look forward to meeting you and your family.

To help you prepare for starting at Thames Ditton Infant School, we have outlined our transition process below. This is designed to ensure a smooth, supportive start for every child.

Transition Timeline

From May
  • An email will be sent to the person who completed your child’s school application. This will include links to our admission forms.
  • We encourage you to return these forms as soon as possible, as this allows us to begin liaising with your child’s nursery or pre-school.
  • Around this time, Acorns (our wraparound provision), will also share information about their registration process.
May / June
  • We will contact all relevant nurseries and early years settings to gather information about your child.
  • This may take place through visits, phone calls, or meetings with staff who know your child well.
End of June
  • You will receive an information pack via email, including:
    • Your child’s class teacher for September
    • Key dates for transition
  • You will also be sent:
    • Dates for 1:1 meetings
    • Your child’s first day at school
    • Details of their staggered start (small group day followed by full-time start)
July
  • We will host a child and parent transition morning, where you will:
    • Visit the Reception classrooms
    • Meet the teaching team
    • Have the opportunity to ask questions
  • Refreshments will be available in the hall, and you will also have the chance to meet the Headteacher and Assistant Headteacher.
September
  • Each child will attend a 1:1 session in their classroom with their parent/carer. This allows time to:
    • Meet the class teacher
    • Explore the learning environment
  • Your child will receive a social story, with photos and simple text to help them understand what to expect when starting school.
  • Children will begin with a small group start day, followed by joining the whole class a few days later. This gradual start helps build confidence and ease any worries.
