The Pupil Premium is extra funding given to schools in England to help improve the educational outcomes of children who may be facing disadvantages. At our school, we use this funding to ensure that all our pupils have the best possible opportunities to succeed — both academically and socially.
Research shows that poverty and low income are key factors in predicting a child’s future life chances. Many pupils from low-income families face barriers that can affect their learning. The Pupil Premium helps schools provide extra support to close the gap between these children and their peers.
Schools receive Pupil Premium funding for pupils who meet one or more of the following criteria:
Free School Meals (FSM): Pupils who are currently eligible, or have been eligible at any point in the past six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’).
Looked After Children (LAC): Children who are in the care of the local authority.
Previously Looked After Children: Children who have left care through adoption, special guardianship, or a similar arrangement.
Service Children: Children with a parent serving in the Regular Armed Forces (within the past five years), who receive the Service Pupil Premium.
At our school, Pupil Premium funding helps us provide:
Targeted academic support (such as small-group tuition)
Wellbeing and pastoral care
Access to enrichment activities and educational visits
Support for families when needed
We regularly review our Pupil Premium strategy to ensure we are making the greatest possible impact on our pupils.
Your child may be eligible for Free School Meals if you receive one of the following:
Universal Credit
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (without Working Tax Credit and with an annual income of £16,190 or less)
Working Tax Credit run-on (for 4 weeks after stopping work or reducing hours)
Children who qualify for Free School Meals also receive Pupil Premium funding — so applying can help both your family and the school.
You may be able to get free school meals and extra funding for your child’s school through the Pupil Premium, if you receive certain benefits. To check your eligibility  please complete this form.
A Looked After Child is one who is being cared for by the local authority. This can include:
Living with foster carers
Staying in a children’s home
Living at home under the supervision of children’s services
These children may be in care voluntarily, or because of a decision made by social services due to concerns for their safety or wellbeing.
Children from Service families may face unique challenges, such as moving schools frequently or having a parent deployed. The Service Pupil Premium provides additional funding to support their emotional wellbeing and help them settle into school life.
