Frequently Asked Questions

Will my child’s 1:1 support hours stay the same?

No. Funding for placements in The Nest differs from that in mainstream education. As such, any 1:1 hours detailed in your child’s EHCP prior to joining The Nest may no longer apply. For further clarification, please contact your SEND caseworker at Surrey County Council.

What is the staff-to-child ratio in The Nest?

Currently, The Nest is led by a qualified class teacher, supported by a Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) and a Learning Support Assistant (LSA). As the unit grows, we will expand the team to ensure children continue to receive the highest level of support.

What support is provided when children join mainstream classes?

A member of staff from The Nest accompanies the children during mainstream integration. The level of support is tailored to each child and may vary from individual to small group support, depending on their specific needs.

How much time will my child spend in mainstream classes?

This is determined on a case-by-case basis, guided by each child’s readiness and individual learning needs. We aim to ensure any transition to mainstream is appropriate and beneficial for each child.

Are children in The Nest included in all school activities?

Yes, we strive to include children in The Nest in all school activities wherever possible.

What therapies are available in The Nest?

The Nest benefits from a dedicated Speech and Language Therapist. Depending on your child’s EHCP, they may also receive additional support such as Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology, or Physiotherapy. If further support is needed, we can refer to external professionals or request changes to the EHCP through the annual review process.

Can parents visit The Nest?

Yes. We hold termly tours to minimise disruption to the children. During your visit, you’ll be shown both The Nest and our mainstream learning environments.

What support is available for children with sensory needs?

We offer a variety of sensory resources, including ear defenders, sensory puzzles, fidget tools, and a light box. Children are also supported with sensory and movement breaks throughout the day. We continually enhance our sensory provision to meet evolving needs.

My child is non-verbal – can they access The Nest?

Yes. Our team is experienced in using Makaton, PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System), and visual communication tools such as Widget. Admission to The Nest is based on our ability to meet the provisions outlined in your child’s EHCP, not on whether they are verbal or non-verbal.
